A Dream Cloud Computes The Future

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Cloud computing is the future of digital storage and computing resources served up remotely from data centers, also known as the cloud. Consumers can access multiple applications from any portable device that supports little processing power. these devices save energy and can access the information from anywhere for as short or as long as required because they take less electricity to power.

Amazon, Google and Microsoft have made a big push in this space to capture market share. For Microsoft, the challenge becomes building on its Azure cloud as businesses in the United States begin to ramp up as the economy improves. For example, the latest version of Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 desktop suite features social networking tools, co-authoring tools and a connection to Microsoft Office Web apps. it also connects through cloud computing.

For Amazon, cloud computing could provide the server capacity that allows it to launch a movie channel on the Kindle, where server capacity would support streaming videos on demand. Apple could also provide this feature on the iPad. in theory, consumers and companies can house data in a secure area on a server cloud. an application suite could allow people to use and transmit data using the programs.

in a perfect cloud world, people would wander around with a light display device with minimal processing power that lets them access applications from anywhere. The devices don’t require huge amounts of processing power. They will only need to pick up and transmit signal and data.

And while these are hypothetical scenarios Joseph Rosenbaum and I discussed recently, the technology isn’t that far off from making it a reality, claims the Reed Smith partner, who chairs the firm’s global Advertising Technology & Media Law practice.

Microsoft has been working on offering applications that support functions that process payroll, create Word documents and edit photos. these applications not only populate a database, but have the ability to send and receive data changes without having the program on your computer.

The idea harkens back to dumb computer terminals, (a concept that I hope shows my knowledge about computing, rather than my age). it allows users to do more with less computing power on the desktop or phone because the server-side software does the processing and they just interact with it. Cloud computing takes that concept a little further.

Rosenbaum tells me his vision of cloud computing connects devices to applications that sit servers. Think utilities, he says. The model would let companies implement a flexible pay-as-you-go system. Pay by the hour, kilowatt or some other type of benchmark. Also think about the way companies began outsourcing IT services or human resources. Sophisticated Adobe rendering software may cost more than Microsoft Word, but people would have access to all on a variety of different devices that could access the Web.

Rosenbaum also points to gas or electronic companies. They don’t care whether you plug a battery charger, PC or toaster into a wall outlet, they charge for the electricity that drives the devices. Imagine you have a screen and a keyboard and could just plug it in as you wandered around the world. all you’d need is an account number and an access point to the Internet, whether wireless or wired. it wouldn’t matter what wireless carrier provides you cellular service, or if your carrier doesn’t offer cellular service. you roam, and more often than not, the phone still works. Why wouldn’t the cloud function be similar?

I nod my head when Rosenbaum suggests Google, Microsoft and Amazon could offer cloud services, but they would need to reach an interoperability agreement, so consumers could quickly move from one application to another worldwide. he explains the theory that “cloud computing is fundamentally built on a capacity model — which is to say that if I have a generator with a specific amount of capacity, I need to make sure I can service my customers at peak times.” thus, “I would try and optimize the use during lower times to make sure the servers don’t work overtime and burn out during some hours of the day, and sit idle at other hours of the day.”

In addition to learning absolutely “nothing” from John Mayer or Nick Lachey, Jessica Simpson takes a stand in the latest issue of Allure magazine.

“He didn’t make me go brunette,” Simpson tells Allure, referring to her darker hairdo in 2006 and 2007. “John doesn’t get credit for making me brunette. He’d like to think so, but he doesn’t deserve the credit.”

While Simpson’s interview was conducted prior to John Mayer’s controversial Playboy interview, Simpson’s cover story in Allure is interesting in that she covers her break-ups and life being single.

“I’m on my own, and it’s nice.”

Rajaan Bennett, a Vanderbilt football prospect, was tragically killed early Thursday in what police are describing as an apparent murder-suicide at Bennett’s mother’s home in Powder Springs.

Police were alerted to danger at the house when they received a 911 call at 2:30 am with someone whispering for help.

Officers arrived about four minutes later, and “as they approached and knocked on the door, they heard several gunshots,” Powders Springs police Major Charles Spann told the AJC.

Immediately after the four or five shots rang out, Narjaketha Bennett, 37, and Taijan Hunter, 32, ran from the house, hysterical, police said.

Two “juveniles” exited the house shortly after that and when police were able to enter the house, they found two people dead: the young Bennett and the 39-year-old Clifton O’Neal Steager, an ex-boyfriend of Bennett’s mother.

Bennett was the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Class AAAAA player of the year and was described by his high school coach as “just one of the best ever” (regarding his character). Needless to say, this is an awful, awful awful situation, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bennett family.

Much like the inexplicable death of prospect Billey Joe Johnson, Bennett’s passing makes everyone wonder, “Why?” clearly it seems like the case of an angry (and likely/possibly drunk) ex-boyfriend of his mother, but it’s just all the more frustrating/disheartening/etc when you hear things like what was recently said by his coach to Vandy officials:

I’m sure you want to talk about Rajaan on the football field, but I promise he’s a better person than he is player. He has a great head on his shoulders, a guy that has been the man in his household for quite a while, yet still worked to maintain a solid GPA in class and become such a great player.

In other words, we aren’t talking about a young man who skated by with bad grades and utilizing his name value/status as a prospect — we’re talking about a legitimately bright young man (who also passed up scholarship offers at bigger schools to attend Vanderbilt) who’s only “crime” was not getting out of the house fast enough.

“We are The World 25 For Haiti” may be one of the most diverse and successful charitable collaborations in history but, it was no match for Ke$ha’s single “Tik Tok”.

Despite selling over 267,000 copies since its arrival at digital retailers, “We are The World 25 for Haiti” failed to reach the top spot on Billboard’s coveted Hot 100 list Thursday.

Coming in at no.2, the Trey Songz, Toni Braxton, Justin Bieber, Usher, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Celine Dion featured cut did however, displace singles from Lady Gaga and Young Money.

In related news, Sade has claimed the no.1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart thanks to Gold certifiable sales of “Soldier of Love” (more on that story here…)

Lovers, you’ve got a little more than one week until the hottest day of the year. No, we’re not talking about summer solstice or the dog days of summer.

Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, the day devoted to red-hot romance, love and hearts, is notoriously hot, hot, hot. And whether lovers are toting home heart shaped boxes of chocolate under their arms, ordering in heart shaped pizzas or going out for a romantic dinner, food plays a big role in Valentine’s celebrations.

So WalletPop thought we’d give lovers a helping hand this year. with the help of Dr. Melody Hart a practitioner at ChicagoHealers.com, we compiled a shopping list of must-have aphrodisiac foods. And, as an added bonus, most of these foods are pulling double duty, offering numerous health benefits, too.

And just in case you’re worried romance will set you back two weeks pay, relax. At $55.89, this feast for two costs less than a bouquet of roses. plus you and your main squeeze can enjoy the health benefits much longer than you would flowers.

Go nuts
“Nuts and sesame seeds have an amino acid called L-arginine that enhances blood flow throughout the body,” says Hart. one pound of roasted mixed nuts — unsalted to protect your heart’s health — will run about $9.99.

Be sweet
Chocolate (70% or more cocoa) releases pleasure-enhancing endorphins in the brain. “Researchers have studied chocolate and found it to contain phenylethylamine and serotonin, which are both “feel good” chemicals,” says Hart.

These “feel goods” occur naturally in our bodies and are released by our brains when we are happy or feeling loving or passionate, but chocolate is a great way to kick start or enhance that passion. “It produces a euphoric feeling, like when you’re in love,” says Hart. Opt for 86% dark chocolate and you’ll improves blood flow to the skin, which enhances hydration, increases dermal thickness, and decreases roughness and scaling. So you and your sweetie will look as youthful as the day you met. the price for all this goodness: $20 for a box of 16 pieces.

Seafood
It seems oysters deserve their reputation of having magical sex-inducing powers. Hart says the zinc in oysters revs up productions of hormones in men and women. not to mention zinc is great at boosting your immune system, too.

But oysters aren’t the only love-friendly food from the sea. Mussels, clams and oysters have all been found to contain D-aspartic acid and NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) compounds, which may be effective in releasing sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen.

One pound of fresh-frozen little neck clams costs about $10.95 a pound. A pound of fresh-frozen blue mussels is also about $10.95. If you splurge and get both, that’s $21.90 for this main course.

Spice it up
Chilies have capsaicin, which Hart says increases circulation and releases endorphins that make you feel good.

“Eating chili peppers generates physiological responses in our bodies like sweating, increased heart rate and circulation, that are similar to those experienced when having sex,” she says.

So not only will you feel good during your romantic meal, all that circulating blood is good for your heart, too. your grocer’s produce department has many dried and fresh options. and since a little chili goes a long way, you can buy a small one for under $1.

Pull out all the stops
Hart says the smell of licorice candy can get a woman “in the mood.” “The smell has shown to be very stimulating.” you can pick up a bag of Twizzlers Pull-n-Peel (which makes sharing fun) for under $3 at your local grocery store.
