The fashion world’s leading voices have paid tribute to the outlandish avant-garde “genius” of Alexander McQueen, the British designer found dead at home in London, after an apparent suicide.

McQueen’s death comes just over a week after his mother, Joyce, died and almost three years since his close friend and style guru, Isabella Blow, committed suicide.

“He was an imaginative designer and a show-stopper,” said the powerful head of the Paris couture federation, Didier Grumbach, of a designer ready to court controversy with “bumster” trousers and ripped clothes, or to send stuffed animals or an amputee model out on the catwalk.

McQueen, 40, a four-time winner of the British designer of the year award, was creative director of his own label, which was bought out by Gucci and was one of Britain’s most lauded fashion designers.

A British Vogue profile says his most recent collection, spring/summer 2010, was critically acclaimed as his best ever.

“He was a genius. what a terrible, tragic waste,” said the equally provocative and politically inclined British designer Katherine Hamnett.

Model Kate Moss said she was “shocked and devastated” at his death on Thursday, while designer Vivienne Westwood was “incredibly sorry” to hear the news.

“Who knows?” couture king Karl Lagerfeld said. “Perhaps after flirting with death too often, death attracts you.

“There was always some attraction to death, his designs were sometimes dehumanised. I found his work very interesting, never banal.”

McQueen’s mother died on February 2. the designer expressed his grief on Twitter the next day, the Daily Mail reported.

“I’m letting my followers know my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not me nor would you RIP mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx…” he wrote.

He added shortly afterwards: ‘But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’

Four days later he said: “Sunday evening been a ****ing awful week but my friends have been great but now i have to some how pull myself together and finish with the HELLS ANGLES & PROLIFIC DEAMONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

McQueen was also deeply affected by the suicide in may 2007 of Blow, the woman credited with discovering him.

Blow, a magazine editor and muse to milliner Philip Treacy, drank weed killer after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

As his family asked for privacy to come to terms with the death, tributes poured in from across the world.

Alexandra Shulman, editor of British Vogue, said: “He influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs.

“His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn’t.”

In Paris, fashion insider for three decades Donald Potard, an artistic agent for designers, dubbed McQueen one of the greatest geniuses on the scene.

“He was one of the most impressive designers I have ever seen,” he said.

“Despite some of the dark macabre themes of his collections, he was a luminous human being.

“At a time when fashion had become predictable, he was like an electric shock, he brought a third dimension and was never afraid of going over the top.”

McQueen cut his teeth as a tailor in Savile Row, where legend has it that he left his distinctive mark – in the form of hand-written obscenities – in the lining of a jacket for Prince Charles, heir to the throne.

He designed the famous “bumster” trousers displaying the cleavage between model’s buttocks in a parody of low-slung trousers worn by workers and survived general condemnation over a collection of ripped clothing, “Highland Rape”, the first time anyone had chosen to send supposed rape victims down the catwalk.

“He was an avant-garde visionary,” said his boss Francois-Henri Pinault, who heads one of the world’s top two luxury groups PPR, which controls the Gucci group (McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney, Boucheron).

“His sometimes provocative genius, which was admired by all, continually opened up new perspectives,” Pinault added.

Even Pierre Berge, the former partner of France’s all-time king of fashion Yves Saint Laurent, hailed his talent.

“This death upsets me greatly,” Berge said on France Info radio. “He had talent and was an artist.”

But asked to comment on McQueen’s contribution to fashion, Berge said, “Contribution, let’s not exaggerate. not many people contribute in life. In any case, he was talented, he showed it, he was passionate about fashion.”

McQueen viewed Saint Laurent as a genius and a source of inspiration. when the French designer died in 2008, McQueen said Saint Laurent was “the reason why I am in fashion”.

“To me fashion should predict the time we live in. he did this is the ’60s and ’70s,” McQueen said at the time. “Pure genius and a man that I always revered and tried to emulate.”

AMERICAN IDOL’s Kris Allen will travel to Haiti with the United Nations Foundation to raise further awareness of the country’s continuing needs after last month’s earthquake. during the IDOL results show on Thursday, Feb. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), Allen will perform and will share footage of his trip to raise awareness and funds that will benefit those in need via one of this year’s IDOL GIVES BACK beneficiaries, the UN Foundation.

During the show, viewers will be asked to support the efforts in Haiti by donating much-needed funds. Donations will be accepted online and via text-messaging, and proceeds will go to the IDOL GIVES BACK Foundation to help the UN Foundation and their work in Haiti.

“It is heartbreaking to see the devastation that Haiti is currently facing,” said Allen. “I am truly honored to be traveling to Haiti to see the UN’s relief efforts firsthand and to help out in any way that I can.”

The Wizards agreed in principle to a three-team trade that sent Jamison to the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to multiple sources. The Wizards will receive center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a first-round pick from Cleveland, while also receiving forwards Al Thornton and Brian Skinner from the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers will get forward Drew Gooden from the Wizards and sent point guard Sebastian Telfair to the Cavaliers.

Jamison’s arrival in Washington in the summer of 2004 signaled a new era for the Wizards. his 5½-year run included four playoff appearances and two all-star selections. He was the last remaining player to win a playoff series with the organization, with Brendan Haywood shipped to Dallas, along with Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson, on Saturday and Gilbert Arenas serving a season-ending suspension for bringing guns into the locker room in a dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton in December.

As Jamison left the Verizon Center, he was asked to give a message to the fans. “I love them more than they love me,” Jamison said, then hopped into his car, in which Gooden was a passenger.

Gooden arrived in Washington in the seven-player trade with Dallas, which also included Josh Howard, Quinton Ross and James Singleton. But Gooden made it known before his arrival that he had no interest in playing for the Wizards. He was seeking a buyout, but the Wizards used him as the piece that was needed to seal the deal with Cleveland.

The trade also closed the chapter on the “Big Three” era in Washington, with a team built around three players who became all-stars in Arenas, Butler and Jamison.

Jamison, 33, had a picture of the Larry O’Brien championship trophy hanging in his locker room stall all season and plans on retiring when his contract ends in two years. He said the only thing that he is playing for is a championship, and he has his best chance with the Cavaliers, who have the league’s best record at 43-11. Jamison joins forces with reigning league’s most valuable player, LeBron James, who reportedly lobbied hard for Jamison, and Shaquille O’Neal. Jamison entered the season expecting to win a title with the Wizards, but that was not going to happen with a team that underachieved and sputtered to a 17-33 start to the season. The frustration of the continued losing, chemistry problems and distractions wore on him as the season carried on.

The Wizards had become more open to moving Jamison after they completed the trade with Dallas, which led to a $2.5 million savings this season and cut more than $15 million in salary next season.

With this trade, the Wizards moved closer to their desire goal of avoiding the luxury tax this season. they saved nearly $2 million as they shipped out more than $16.2 million in salary while taking back just $14.3 million. After receiving a 50 percent savings for the salaries of the suspended Arenas and Crittenton, the Wizards need to cut another $600,000 to reach their goal. That could possibly be accomplished by negotiating a buyout with the 7-foot Ilgauskas, who could return to the Cavaliers 30 days after an agreement is reached.

Unlike the last trade, the Wizards actually received a talented young prospect in return. The Wizards were high on Thornton in the 2007 NBA draft, but he went two spots ahead of Nick Young. He was averaging 10.7 points this season for the Clippers. He averaged 13.7 points throughout his career.
