Ash Wednesday marks first day of lent
Posted by: | Comments
The faithful came in droves to the five Ash Wednesday masses and services at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Manteca.
The day which marks the first day of lent always brings large crowds to church for the traditional imposition of ashes on the faithfuls’ foreheads. but at the noon Scripture Service, Father Patrick Walker, noted that Wednesday’s attendance was the largest he has ever seen for a noon service in the years he was pastor of St. Anthony’s.
Many of those who filled the church were multi-generational families – grandparents with their children and grandchildren like the Mendieta family. A good number of parishioners had to stand in the back and along the sides of the church, as well as in the vestibule area for the luncheon hour service.
During his brief homily after the scripture readings, Father Walker explained the reason for the traditional practice of giving up something – one’s favorite food like chocolate, for instance – during the Lenten season. It’s the same reason behind the observance of fasting and abstinence (no meat) on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays throughout the 40 days of lent – to “put God first above chocolate, above everything,” he said.
“Put aside extra food and say, ‘no, Lord, I’m going to choose you. I’m going to choose you above all things.’ Even better, do charitable work,” he said, perhaps helping a neighbor during the lent season and then continue doing that practice even after lent.
Doing charitable deeds “over and above the normal things we do – that’s the gift of lent,” Father Walker said.
For as Jesus said, “whatever you do for the least of my people you do unto me,” the pastor reminded the faithful.
We show our love for Jesus “by our example, by our love” when we do something good to others, he said. “When we love Jesus, we see Christ in others and we respond in love.”
During the 40-day Lenten journey, let us “choose Christ above everything in our life and live for him,” he concluded his homily.
As of Wednesday, members of the extended Mendieta family have not finalized any list of things that they are giving up for lent. but grandmother Irene Mendieta who came to the noon Ash Wednesday service with daughter Jennifer and three grandchildren in tow, two of them in a stroller, said she is going to “give more time for family.” and since she enjoys drinking soda, she may give that up for lent, she said.
Daughter Jennifer, who just graduated from Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo, said giving up something for lent will be a family affair.
“It’s easier if you do it as a family to support each other,” she said.
They have also planned to set aside 20 minutes a day – 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes around dinner time – to “talk to each other about what matters most, what we are thankful for,” Jennifer said.
In the Catholic faith, fasting is required for those from age 18 through 60. They also have to abstain from meat all Fridays of lent. Abstinence applies to all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. the observance of lent will continue through the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.
An Interactive Guide to Navigating Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday
Posted by: | CommentsNew Orleans is a tricky city to navigate, even on the best of days. At nearly 300 years old, the streets are very narrow, and in Orleans Parish (or Orleans “County”), most are one-way. Add a parade to the mix, and things get far more difficult.
Today is Fat Tuesday (or Mardi Gras), the climax of Carnival season, and in Orleans Parish alone, there’s not just one parade, but dozens upon dozens of them–some with floats, others are just walking parades, but all are exuberant and jammed with spectators. Apart from hotels, restaurants, and drinking establishments, nearly every business in the city is shuttered, and families are venturing out into the streets to watch the floats and costumes roll by. no one will be driving except the police, the float-pullers, and tourists who have to be back at their desks on Ash Wednesday. If you’re unfortunate enough to be in last group, here’s a guide to the obstacles you’ll face when you get behind the wheel today. Just click here to see the handy-dandy interactive map that your TCC revelers put together.
As an added bonus, here’s a clip of Mardi Gras’ best-kept secret, the Society of Ste. Anne (mistakenly called the Krewe of St. Anne in the title), marching up Royal Street, having a lot of fun, and generally making life miserable for any poor schmuck trapped behind the wheel. we hope you’re not in that number, but if you are, turn off the motor, get down from your car, and join the party for a while.

Olympians' Say They Jam To Shyne, Gucci Mane & dead prez
Posted by: | Comments
Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps made headlines when he revealed that Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy are just a few of the artists he listens to to prepare for swim matches. and it looks like the athletes taking part in the 2010 Winter Olympics also listen to Hip Hop to stay motivated.
RollingStone.com recently asked a handful of winter athletes including snowboarders Gretchen Bleiler, Elena Hight, and Louie Vito what songs are included in their playlists and their choices might be a little surprising.
Vito, who will be competing in the Olympic halfpipe, had the most Hip Hop heavy playlist with songs like “Justify my Thug” by Jay-Z, “Bingo” by Gucci Mane, and “Diamonds and Mac 10s” by Shyne. Vito’s list also included songs from Eminem, Dr. Dre, Da Underdawgz, Lil Scrappy, and more.
“Most tracks produced by Lil Jon go hard and get you ready to go, and add Lil Scrappy on there and I am definitely going to back that,” said Vito of “Oh Yeah,” his Lil Scrappy pick.
Among Gretchen Bleiler’s picks were dead prez’s “It’s bigger Than Hip Hop,” a Tribe Called Quest’s “Da Booty,” and RUN-DMC’s “It’s like That.”
And Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” and T.I. and Rihanna’s “Live Your Life” were just a few of the songs featured on Elena Hight’s playlist.
Tiger Woods to break silence on Friday – agent
Posted by: | Comments
LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Tiger Woods will break his silence on Friday, when he is expected to address his plans for the future in the wake of a sex scandal that drove the golf superstar into seclusion.
Woods’ agent said Wednesday that the 34-year-old golfer will speak at 11 am Eastern Time (1600 GMT) on Friday at the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass, headquarters of the US PGA Tour at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Woods will make a statement to a select group of media, with one television camera to relay the event live, but he won’t take questions, agent mark Steinberg said.
“While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between him and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him,” Steinberg said in a statement. “He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends, and that’s what he’s going to discuss.
“His remarks will be open to a press pool for live coverage. It is NOT a news conference.”
It remains to be seen how deep Woods will delve into the scandal that erupted around him in the wake of a mysterious car crash outside his Florida home in the early hours of November 27.
“It’s encouraging that he’s coming back to at least be seen by the public, and the rest of us, too,” British Open champion Stewart Cink said at the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona.
“I don’t know what he’s going to talk about,” Cink said. “I think this is maybe the beginning of the comeback process for him.
“It will be good to see Tiger’s face again and see that he’s actually out there somewhere.”
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington said Woods was wise to make his first public appearance a strictly controlled one.
“The first time out, he’s better controlling it,” Harrington said. “Over time, there will be questions. At the moment, the best thing is a more controlled environment and gradually ease his way back into it.”
Shortly before Woods’ crash, the National Enquirer published a story claiming he had been seeing a nightclub hostess.
After the crash, a welter of women claimed they had affairs with Woods, and he became a target of tabloids and television comedians.
In December, Woods announced via his website that he would take an “indefinite break” from golf.
“I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children,” the married father of two said in a statement on his website then.
“I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness.”
Since then speculation has raged as to the 14-time major champion’s whereabouts, the state of his marriage and just when and where he would make his return.
In January widespread reports placed Woods at a rehabilitation clinic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he was receiving treatment for sex addiction.
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, who was at the Match Play Championship, declined to speculate on what Woods would have to say, but like Cink he welcomed his decision to speak.
“I’m pleased he’s going to make some comments,” Finchem said, adding that Woods had asked to use the TPC Sawgrass facility.
“We were asked to make the facility available and help with the logistics,” Finchem said.
“Like everybody else, we’ll learn what he has to say. My sense is that this is part of his schedule and what he’s going through. I don’t know what he’s going to say, what he’s going to do after he finishes his rehab.”
Finchem will certainly be on hand to hear what the player who has become the face of the game globally has to say.
“I will be in attendance,” Finchem said.
Woods’ long awaited public appearance will comes in the middle of the Match Play tournament, whose chief sponsor Accenture dropped Woods in the midst of the scandal.
“I suppose he might want to get something back against the sponsor that dropped him,” said world number eight Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.
Finchem said he didn’t believe Woods’ appearance would detract from the elite event.
“We have tournaments every week,” Finchem said. “I think it’s going to be a story in and of itself. A lot of people are going to be watching golf this week to see what the world of golf says about it, my guess is. So that will be a good thing.”
The Naked Acre

The Naked Acre. part 1
To everyone their own Eden. People who carve their home into a wildwood will feel likepioneers. Those who begin from scratch on a naked lot will, when they have brought theirown trees there and reared them to a design, feel like creative artists. Each specimenwill be theirs by choice, not chance, and they may feel more free than the wildwood folksto alter their composition as it develops: to erase mistakes and improve improvisations.all its parts will be beholden to the owners for their presence, not vice versa. From thevery start the owners will have full control of, and responsibility for, all their trees’well-being. Awareness of this last may weigh on new owners’ consciences, like the futureof their children, but in the end a pardonable pride will make up for growing pains.Curiously, more people have qualms about raising trees than worry about reproducing andrearing their own kind.
They seem to think that luck has a lot to do with trees, or that you need a green thumb toensure tree health and beauty. In comparison with children, trees are far more amenable, and hardy. Firmness of hand and purpose, and a cheerful patience, are all that you reallyneed if you observe from the outset the basic needs of tree life, which are three:moisture, nourishment, and air space. The first two are of course controllable through thesoil. less obviously, so is the third. when a young tree is transplanted, air for itsroots is just as important as for its upper parts. Infant mortality among trees in newgrounds results more often from suffocation than from any other cause. there is a sorrytendency, even among tree merchants who should know better, to plant young stock toodeeply or in ground not loosened widely enough around the questing new roots.
Worried that their plantings may blow over, people plunk them into narrow, hard-walledholes and pound them tight. Then they drench them with too much water, stuff them with toomuch food, fuss over them and peek at the roots to see “how they are doing.” The time topeek at roots is when you buy the tree, or dig it afield yourself. but let us come to thatphase of treescaping a naked acre after considering the over-all plan. one of the firstand most talented Americans to be called “landscape architect,” the late great FredericLaw Olmsted, was irritated by the title. he said: “Landscape is not a good word;architecture is not; the combination is not. Gardening is worse. . . . The art is notgardening nor is it architecture. … it is the sylvan art, fine art in the distinctionfrom Horticulture, Agriculture, or the sylvan useful art.” he defined his work, which wasusually on the grandest scale, in terms too sweeping to apply to our small naked-acreproblems. Olmsted cleared headlands to display their lofty contours. he felled whole woodsto reveal distant mountain heights or valley depths. he restored the natural sweep ofwatercourses, adjusted the sites of ugly structures “with a motive to avoid unnecessaryjar upon the foreground of a soothing prospect.” And yet his catalog of work elements endsin “fixing . . . the position and outlines of a stable . . . the course of a walk … orthe height of a fence or of a hencoop . . . the answer in one word is – design.”
The average practitioner of Olmsted’s art today is perforce more tradesman than maestro.he is reduced to carving walnut shells instead of panoramas. he is scarcely needed by thehome owner whose problems this book approaches. too much good money changes hands inreturn for piddling professional preciosities, when anyone with half an eye for form andperspective can lay out his own modest green spot unaided. Within the limits herecontemplated – an acre, more or less – the essence of good taste will be good sense. Andin the smallest frame, there is always room for that personal touch which, howeverinvisible it may be to others, will spell out self-expression. The Japanese in theirhuddled culture found this out and perfected it some centuries ago. full as the phonebooks are of landscapists, the house-and-grounds periodicals are even fuller of plantingsuggestions for new home owners. many of these run to fancified effects, but invariablythey show pictures of how different species look when grown in various combinations. Ifthere is in your family no talent for sketching, amuse and instruct yourselves by playingwith cutouts from magazines and catalogs superimposed on blown-up photographs of yourhouse and lot. As a matter of duty, not presumption, some basic suggestions are offeredherewith. what you are likely to be after will come under four headings: warmth, shade, beauty, and privacy. by warmth is meant a visual, not a physical, effect – a sense of thehouse and any outbuildings having come to dwell in, not just on, the site. Planting aroundthe foundations is the answer to this need, but the commonest mistake that warmth seekersmake is to overdo such planting, to swaddle the architecture so thickly with growths thatin a few short years it is stifled. most new houses nowadays are low in profile, and soshould be their foundation planting. Evergreens give a warm look all year round, butbeware of species that will spindle up, like spruce, cedar, arborvitae and cryptomeria.Low-growing by habit or easily kept so by trimming are mugho pine, pfitzer juniper, mostforms of Taxus (yew), and such other stand-bys as box and prostrate Euonymus. Solid banksof evergreens can become troublesome. A plague of scale, weevils, or nematodes can deformor wipe out the lot.
Spaced apart by deciduous shrubs they are less care and, to most eyes, less trite. on anorth side the deciduous species may not do so well and will perhaps be omitted, but stilldon’t overcrowd the evergreens. Shade can be as important for people indoors as out, butno tree planted for shade should be put closer than twenty feet from your house. Besidesaffording room for roots and branches you must think ahead to the time when too muchcanopy may bring dampness as well as coolness to your rooms. Repeated pruning of a tree tokeep it from moldering or thrashing the architecture is a two-way nuisance – to yourselfand the tree. Any shade tree ordained by Nature to grow much higher than your house isbest planted, to start with, toward a border of your property. In per-acre terms, ten”big” trees will be found a great plenty, particularly if twice as many “small” trees, andsome shrubs and flowers, need to be given living space.
Marianna Bogucki: Valentine’s Day: A Reflection
Posted by: | CommentsI’m a fan of Valentine’s Day, despite having experienced my 23rd straight February 14th without a valentine. In school they always make it enjoyable, what with all the sugar and mail (nothing’s more exciting to a child than mail. This is a fact). even in high school, where I was a moody teenager with raging hormones, Valentine’s Day was light-hearted and fun. Disclosure: even at my moodiest I was happier than most teens. I’m really, really easy to please. Overall I never understood the angsty anti-Valentine’s Day/wear black/be a jerk movement. It’s a day to eat candy and send mail. Find me two things more enjoyable than candy and mail! have I mentioned I’m easy to please?
Going to a women’s college made Valentine’s Day obsolete for the seemingly small but actually very large portion of us who were both straight and unattached. I would try to wear pink as I am that person that feels that all holidays should be properly represented by their assigned color, but generally didn’t pay much attention to it. I did laugh along with everyone else when a snowstorm closed the post office one Valentine’s Day and everyone who had been sent flowers were stuck getting dead bouquets when it opened up again a few days later. that wasn’t out of spite, however — that was just hilarious.
Now that I’m no longer in school, Valentine’s Day seemed to sneak up on me. Earlier this week my mother, an elementary school volunteer, came home with a white paper bag and set me to work decorating it. she wanted it to be prettier than her students. I welcomed the chance to use the fancy pair of scissors I got for Christmas and created a masterpiece of heart shaped papercuttings. I figured this would be my only Valentine’s Day activity.
On Saturday night, I went to a birthday party for a friend in Hoboken. I had vague hopes of turning some poor bloke into Ryan roughly 25 seconds into this video:
Alas….it was not meant to be.
I returned home from Hoboken, scarred from numerous train changes and 45 minute layovers at unheated stations to find two valentines on the table in my living room. The first one, from my dad, was addressed to a daughter who’s one of a kind:
Unfortunately his card was not one of a kind as the next one was from my mother:

Mom and Dad had a good laugh about how unoriginal they were while I had an even bigger laugh….this is the third year in a row one of them has gotten me this card. I know this because I cleaned my room the other day and remembered finding this card:
Unfortunately for this story I finally threw out all of the greeting cards that have been kicking around my room forever. I always saved them “in case I would need them.” This is probably the only instance I would ever need them again… and I threw them out.
The laughter continued, we popped some champagne, downed some wine, then my dad made ham wrapped in pie crust (So good. So deadly). Eclairs and the Olympics rounded out the day.
Maybe next year I’ll get a card from the man of my dreams….or maybe I’ll get the “For a Daughter Who’s one of a Kind” card for the 4th year in a row. Either way works for me — they’ll both make me smile.
At a time when Barrack Obama and company are pursuing a way to save Detroit, a franchised domestic dealership in Gainesville FL, is raking in exceptional profits. A seo specialist in Florida has helped make this dream a reality at a moment in time when many auto dealers are closing thier doors. This accomplishment proves that domestic dealerships can in fact become profitable.
Regardless of the current economic plight, Santa Fe Ford’s used cars and trucks are selling faster than Girl Scout cookies at a milk parade. A Florida online marketing firm, MarketinginFlorida.com has aimed the bulk of Santa Fe Ford’s marketing campaign toward ranking the dealership highly for used cars Gainesville FL
“During the past 8 months I have gotten out of my entire stock of problem inventory, almost completely via retail sales, and for the first time in many years I have a used car department that is quite profitable. Marketing in Florida’s online marketing services and our competitive pricing strategies have been directly responsible for the increases in my pre-owned sales department. We spend almost no money advertising our pre-owned inventory other than our internet marketing efforts and currently, about 72% of our closed deals come directly from our web marketing.” Greg Waitcus, Vice President, Santa Fe Ford.
Santa Fe Ford’s achievments prove that today’s franchised dealerships can become profitable if they adapt their business model and web marketing to be in-line with what today’s car buyers call for. It is not the mid-80’s anymore. Today’s car buyer understands the market value of vehicles and demands full disclosure before they visit or even call the dealership.
By and large, the 20,000+ car dealers in America are local companies that are owned and run by civic-minded businessmen who practice their faith, support their local little leagues and treat their customers with respect. With a mid-sized Ford dealership posting massive returns month after month, Barrack Obama and friends must find a path for the Detroit auto makers to become viable. If GM is allowed to go away, the ripple effect may bankrupt America.
In a Detroit bankruptcy, it is the local dealers that will be asked to cover the loss on all of their new inventory. It is not the manufactures that are financing all that inventory, it is the local dealers. Without solvent manufacture backing, all of the local auto dealer’s existing new inventory would have to be immediately written down to auction levels as all manufactures warranties and backing would become void. For nearly all affected dealerships, those write downs would put them out of business as they would be in immediate violation of the loan agreements with their floor planners. Without the low cost financing for their inventory, nearly no franchised auto dealers can keep going.
Across the country domestic auto dealers directly and indirectly support an unfathomable workforce spanning many industries. They generate incredible amounts of state and local tax revenue and make a significant portion of political and charitable contributions. With unemployment over 8% and now talk that it may shoot over 10%, America would have a hard time recovering from loosing Detroit.
The disappearing of jobs and tax revenue at all levels would be {staggering|devestating}. Franchised auto dealers are the brute strength of their local economies. Collectively, auto dealers are the backbone of America. Domestic auto makers and congress must find a way to save Detroit or risk a very real failure of America.

Search Engine Advertising for Your Brick and Mortar Business
Posted by: | CommentsIf you run a small company with less than twelve employees that caters to mostly local clientele, then you need an Internet presence!
Increasingly, your potential customers are parting with those outdated Yellow Pages print books for Google and other web search engines. It’s effortless and quick to do a search for “Market Your Business On The World Wide Web”. If you don’t find the service you are searching for in the city of Charlottesville, you can very simply extend your research to “Internet Marketing Services Staunton VA” or even “Internet Marketing Services Central Virginia”. (How much time and how many overweight phone books would you need to do a wide area search like that with the Yellow Pages?)
Market Your Business On The World Wide Web
If your brick and mortar business doesn’t use the internet to advertise itself, keep in touch with its clients, broaden its reach, and lure away your competitions prospects, you can bet that it’s competition will do it to you… and it will happen in the very near future.
For many small businesses, moving from conventional OFFline promotion to the ONline world is a very difficult thing to do. Quite a few brick and mortar businesses hang on to “the way we’ve always done it” and reject online marketing.
How should you move your company from “the way it’s always been done” to an online marketing mind set?
How To Take Your OFFline Business ONline…
Internet promotion does not always call for a web site. Email marketing by itself can make a huge difference.
For a small offline company to succeed with a promotional campaign on the net would probably necessitate the commitment (and salary) of a full time employee. Establishing a simple direct-response web page or two, acquiring a keyword focused domain name, search engine marketing, email marketing, article marketing, and other online promotion are major tasks. Once your web site or email opt-in methods are set up, Search Engine Marketing is the major task. However, unless it is continued on a regular basis, it won’t generate the wanted results.
A web site is great, but it is easily forgotten unless it is promoted continuously and updated on a regular basis.
Employing a qualified outside online marketing service is a smart solution for local businesses who would like to to add a web presence to their promotion, but who don’t want the additional work.
All in all, crossing the offline/online gap should not be considered a major hurdle. There are services — right in your own area — that can assist. Here’s a thought… Why not Google “Internet Marketing Yourtown Yourstate” or “Online Marketing For Local Businesses Yourtown Yourstate” and see what you come up with? It’s the way smart business is done now!
Why A Keyword Research Tool Is Essential For The Success Of Your Business
Posted by: | CommentsAs almost any webmaster is going to be able to tell you, the key to running a successful online business is getting traffic to your webpages. I have actually seen lists that show you well over a hundred different ways to acquire this traffic and some of them are really ingenious. The difficult part about this is that many people get so wrapped up in these various forms of acquiring traffic that they may actually be skipping some of the best traffic that they can ever received. This comes in the form of free traffic from the search engines, and if you want some of that you are going to need a keyword research tool.
Free search engine traffic is not only going to be targeted, if you hit the proper keyword phrases and do your search engine optimization properly, you will get a flood of traffic that is not able to be beat by any of the other methods. That is because people are going to the search engines and typing in something that they want. If you are able to achieve a high ranking for the phrase that they are typing into the search engines, the traffic that you receive is going to be unbelievably targeted. It is very easy for you to convert these individuals over to either sales or leads, whichever you’re going after.
One of the reasons why a keyword research tool is so beneficial to you is because it will help you to identify what people are searching for, taking the guesswork out of the entire process. After all, it would do little good for you to guess at your keywords and not take into consideration what people are actually typing into the search engines, you would be very disappointed with a small amount of traffic that you would receive. Some of these tools will even go a step further than helping you to research keyword phrases and they will identify those that have low competition in the search engines, giving you the opportunity to rise to the top quickly.
If you begin to focus your efforts on these keywords and build webpages to target them, you will quickly find out how successful your Internet business can be. By using a keyword research tool to help you along the way, you will be able to streamline the process and to spend more time on other areas of your business.
