POWDER SPRINGS, Ga.Powder Springs police said that 18-year-old Rajaan Bennett was killed in a murder-suicide early Thursday morning.

Bennett, a running back at McEachern High School, had just signed in the beginning of February to play with the Vanderbilt Commodores.

According to NewsChannel 5’s CBS Atlanta Affiliate WGCL, police received a 911 call from someone in Bennett’s house Thursday morning whispering for help. When police arrived and knocked on the door, four to five gunshots rang out.

The running back’s mother, 37-year-old Narjaketha Bennett, and uncle, 32-year-old Taiwan Hunter, fled the home. WGCL said Hunter had been shot, and was taken to Atlanta Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

Also, two juvenile family members fled the home unharmed.

SAN BERNARDINO – Area Roman Catholics flocked to church on Wednesday to celebrate Ash Wednesday.

Parishioners marked the first day of Lent by receiving black ashes on their foreheads as a sign of repentance.

“Lent is not an endurance test,” Deacon Dan O’Camb told the faithful at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in north San Bernardino. “It is a spiritual exercise that will change us into a holier people.”

O’Camb urged parishioners to continue the three facets of Christian penance – charity, prayer and fasting – long after the 40 days of Lent are over.

“Instead of thinking, `I can do this for 40 days,’ we should be thinking, `I can do this for the rest of my life,”‘ O’Camb said.

The ashes used in the ceremony are made by burning the remains of the palms blessed on Palm Sunday of the previous year.

“It’s an acknowledgment to the rest of the world that we’re sinners and we’re eager to enter into the process of conversion,” said Father David Fitzgerald, the priest at Our Lady of the Assumption.

Catholics abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays before Easter.

“The sacrifices we make during Lent not only help us to be closer to God, but they help the community as well,” Fitzgerald said.

Blake Boggust, who has attended Our Lady of the Assumption since 1994, looked forward to receiving the ashes at a bilingual mass on Wednesday evening.

“It gives me an opportunity to embrace the

fragility of my human condition and turn to God’s grace to develop a new life,” said Boggust, 59. “It’s a good opportunity for everyone to come together. it doesn’t matter who you are.”

CHICAGO (AP)—U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir will replace the fox on one of hiscostumes with faux fur after he and his costume designer were targeted by ananimal rights group.

Weir received “hate mail and death threats,” agent Tara Modlin said onThursday, and he doesn’t want anything to disrupt his performances at theVancouver Olympics.

“He’s changing it because he needs to focus on skating,” she said.

Friends of Animals posted an open letter to Weir after he added white foxfur to the left shoulder of his free skate costume for the U.S. figure skatingchampionships. on Tuesday, the animal advocacy group called his costumedesigner, Stephanie Handler, and faxed a press release about its open letter toher business.

Since then, Weir has heard from other anti-fur activists, Modlin said.although People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals made its case in aprofessional manner, Modlin said others did not—to the point she and Weir wereconcerned someone might disrupt him at Vancouver.

Weir qualified for his second Olympic team by finishing third at the U.S.champs.

“I do not want something as silly as my costume disrupting my secondOlympic experience and my chance at a medal, a dream I have had since I was akid,” Weir said in a statement.

Weir makes no secret of his love of fashion—fur included—and he’sreceived letters and videos from PETA and other animal-rights advocates over theyears. although he respects their positions and was fully aware of how pelts areobtained, Weir has said wearing fur was a personal choice.

There are other causes that concern him more, he said, such as homelessness, soldiers dying and the devastation in Haiti.

“I hope these activists can understand that my decision to change mycostume is in no way a victory for them, but a draw,” Weir said in hisstatement. “I am not changing in order to appease them, but to protect myintegrity and the integrity of the Olympic Games as well as my fellowcompetitors.

“Just weeks away from hitting my starting position on the ice in Vancouver,I have technique and training to worry about and that trumps any costume and anythreat I may receive.”

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) – Eight of the 10 American missionaries who faced child kidnapping charges in Haiti left the quake-devastated nation for the United States after a judge freed them without bail.

The charges were not dropped, but the missionaries were freed and whisked to the airport in a van bearing diplomatic plates to board a US military transport plane for Miami.

One of the Americans smiled and waved as he got into the van along with his colleagues, and they were driven out of the compound where they had been held since their arrest on January 29.

Others in the group looked worn and shaken.

Witnesses saw their plane leave the Port-au-Prince airport, and the US State Department later confirmed the eight had departed for the United States.

The emotionally charged case has dragged on for 19 days, drawing the attention of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and overshadowing the critical relief effort after a devastating earthquake on January 12 left more than 217,000 people dead and over a million homeless.

Haitian Secretary of State for Public Security Claudy Gassant delivered the release order to the Americans while they still stood behind bars.

Two other missionaries — group leader Laura Silsby and her confidante Charisa Coulter — remained in detention in Port-au-Prince because Judge Bernard Saint-Vil wants to determine their motives for an earlier trip to Haiti before the quake, the Americans’ lawyer Aviol Fleurant said.

According to Fleurant, they had previously visited Haiti to help out at an orphanage in the country’s northeast, though he did not provide more details.

He earlier told AFP that Coulter had become sick in jail and was being treated for an unspecified illness. She is reportedly a diabetic.

Relatives of the missionaries expressed relief at the release.

“It’s been awful but we entrusted in God that it would happen,” Phyllis Allison, the mother of group member Jim Allen, told CNN.

Allison said her son traveled to the deeply impoverished country to help people rebuild after the disaster.

“He just wanted to help them,” she said.

Allen’s Haitian lawyer, Louis Gary Lissade, a former Haitian justice minister, said the charges against the eight had not yet been dropped, although he expressed confidence that would happen soon.

Gassant stressed that the release does not prove the eight are guilty or innocent, and they should be prepared to return to Haiti as the investigation continues.

“The release such as the one today is not a definitive decision. They should remain available for presentation before the judge,” he said.

Fleurant said Silsby has an orphanage in the neighboring Dominican Republic, the Spanish-speaking country that shares the isle of Hispaniola with Haiti.

After the ruling, the US State Department said Washington “respects the sovereign right of the government of Haiti to conduct its own judicial processes.”

“Haitian authorities have been cooperative in ensuring the individuals’ safety and welfare since their arrest and we have every expectation this will continue,” it said.

The US nationals, Baptist missionaries belonging to the New Life Children’s Refuge, were caught trying to take a busload of 33 supposed orphans across the border to the Dominican Republic without authorization.

After it emerged that some of the children had parents, the Americans’ lawyers have sought to portray the Baptists as acting selflessly to help during Haiti’s catastrophe.

Some parents told the judge they willingly handed over the children because they could no longer care for them following the devastating quake that reduced much of the Haitian capital to rubble.

Fleurant earlier expressed concern that the judge may want to question his clients to determine their relationship with their former legal adviser, Jorge Puello.

Police in El Salvador are investigating Puello for his alleged involvement in a sex trafficking ring, although he has denied the allegations.

Puello says he had no contact with the Americans prior to their arrest.

The pews at Corpus Christi Catholic Church were full of penitent parishioners for services on Ash Wednesday.

“Basically the use of ashes is a sign of penance, a sign of turning away from sin,” said the Rev. William Miller, pastor at Corpus Christi.

Ash Wednesday represents the beginning of the season of Lent, a period of 40 days before Easter Sunday.

“This is the one season of the year we focus on the sorrows and the sufferings of Christ,” Miller said.

Miller said that Catholics celebrate Lent by doing what Miller calls “spring training for the soul.” This includes increasing prayer, fasting and almsgiving. under the category of fasting, many Catholics take on some of their own suffering by giving up something they enjoy.

“Sweets and desserts is a common one,” Miller said, adding that he, too, stays away from desserts and fried food during Lent. Soda and alcohol are also popular items to give up during Lent, he said.

Miller recommends only giving up one or two things because if you try to give up too many things, it just won’t work out.

Bakeries bring on the paczki ahead of Lent

Posted by: | Comments (0)

On fat Tuesday, Lansing-area bakeries churned out dozens of paczki to give local residents their last taste of goodness before the Lenten season starts today.

The notorious high-fat Polish pastries – which are actually pronounced “poonch-key” – are deep-fried and packed with a variety of sweet fillings, from cherry, to lemon to chocolate cream.

“I think they’re very decadent. It’s a good way to go out with a bang before people start eating healthy for Lent,” said Mama Bear’s Cafe owner Cecilia Garcia, who made about seven dozen raspberry and plum organic paczki at her shop in old Town.

Many mid-Michigan residents and people across the U.S. have adopted the Polish tradition of devouring paczki before the start of the sacrificial season of Lent, which begins today with Ash Wednesday.
