Bakeries bring on the paczki ahead of Lent
Posted by: | Comments
On fat Tuesday, Lansing-area bakeries churned out dozens of paczki to give local residents their last taste of goodness before the Lenten season starts today.
The notorious high-fat Polish pastries – which are actually pronounced “poonch-key” – are deep-fried and packed with a variety of sweet fillings, from cherry, to lemon to chocolate cream.
“I think they’re very decadent. It’s a good way to go out with a bang before people start eating healthy for Lent,” said Mama Bear’s Cafe owner Cecilia Garcia, who made about seven dozen raspberry and plum organic paczki at her shop in old Town.
Many mid-Michigan residents and people across the U.S. have adopted the Polish tradition of devouring paczki before the start of the sacrificial season of Lent, which begins today with Ash Wednesday.

American Idol 9, February 17 Recap: Switching things Upby Tyler Sandersfeld — 02/18/2010 with seven of the top 24 revealed, it’s time to find out who the other 17 are. who has to sit on Kara’s lap? can Angela Martin (right) finally make it after multiple attempts? and why are only 11 of the 12 male semifinalists shown getting the good news?
View Printable version of this article
Tuesday night saw seven of the top 24 chosen, while two others left either with or without grace. Now, the rest of the playing field will be filled. will your favorite make it? This… is American Idol, and it’s more popular than the Olympics. Take that, NBC!
An exhausted holding room awaits the rest of the results. seven spots are gone, and thirty-seven singers remain. One of them is Janell Wheeler. her audition left Simon saying no, but her first round Hollywood performance changed his mind. however, group round and the final solo weren’t as strong. oh, and news got out fast that she’s dating Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow. Does her canoodling with a celebrity give her an advantage? Ellen tells Janell that it’s tough to go from wine sales to singing full time. It’s hard for Ellen to tell someone with a great voice they’re not going through… so she won’t. Janell is semifinalist #8. if she was Bikini Girl, she’d kiss Ryan right now. Was that supposed to be a clever dig?
Next up is Tyler “Not Sandersfeld” Grady. he asked the judges not to take his final song choice, “Home”, too literally. Tyler is influenced by the rockers of the ’60s and ’70s like Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, and Jim Morrison. Kara likes Tyler’s ’70s vibe and his dance moves. Kara asks if he’ll bring back more of those moves, and he will. Kara’s happy about that, because Tyler is in. Yay, I’m in! oh, wait…
No one hasn’t been eliminated yet in this episode. will that change with Lacey Brown? Lacey made this walk last season, but was cut while Megan Joy moved on to baffle viewers. Simon says the girls are a lot tougher this year. Apparently, Lacey is tougher, too. She’s in as well.
As Lacey’s performance of “What a Wonderful World” plays in the background, we catch brief glimpses of good news for Ashley Rodriguez, Alex Lambert (really?), and Joe Muoz. Ah, Joe. welcome to CannonFodderville.
Crystal Bowersox and her nasty teeth are next. This is big for Crystal, being on a show watched by three million people. When she’s corrected (it’s thirty million), she’s even more nervous. Simon asks Crystal if she though this isn’t the right platform for her. Crystal agreed at one point in time, but she is glad she came now. the judges were all in agreement she’s in, too. the judges get to meet her ridiculously cute son now. is anyone getting eliminated, or are they sweeping the unlucky under the rug?
Will the bad news finally come for Katie Stevens? You know, the girl with the Alzheimer’s-suffering grandmother? Katie got some good reviews in Hollywood, but will she make it into the top 24? Ellen hates hurting people’s feelings, so we should know this is another good news. and… it is. Simon thinks her grandmother will be happy.
Of course, some people had to be eliminated, and we finally get a montage of five cut singers. Maddie Penrose is the only one I recognize, however. at least I won’t have to see her stupid glasses anymore.
Will Angela Martin be another elimination? This is her third season auditioning, and also her last year of eligibility. her father was killed in the first year of auditioning, and she was still dealing with her daughter’s seizures. Last year, she had to go to jail. This year, she’s feeling the growth inside her. no mention of her missing mother? will she finally get a break? Kara comes right up to her, makes Angela sit on her lap, and… dumps her. From the competition, that is. Kara tries to soothe Angela by saying they’ll remember her. I know some people may have found that nice of Kara, but I found it a little patronizing.
Will Lilly Scott get the same treatment? her jazzy first day performance earned her a fan club, but she met a lot of snags in her band performance of a song with a name I can’t think of at the moment. Kara says Lilly doesn’t have the biggest voice. She doesn’t believe that’s always the best way to sing, however, so Lilly is in.
Joining Lilly in the top 24 are Paige Miles, Siobhan Magnus, Michelle Delamor, Jermaine Sellers, and John Park. They chose Paige Miles over Angela Martin? Considering we haven’t seen any performance of Paige other than her lame attempt during group day, I’m guessing Idol never planned on giving her a shot to win, anyway.
Only one spot remains for the girls, and it’s down to 16-year-olds Tori Kelly and Haeley Vaughn. Tori thinks she did well, especially in her last performance of “Hot ‘n cold,” which wasn’t all that great to be honest. meanwhile, Simon says that last year would have been an easy choice for Haeley to get in, but this year it’s tougher. Randy tells Tori that… she’s out. Haeley is in.
Two guys are left in the holding room Thaddeus Johnson with the boisterous mother and the misstep at his final performance, and Andrew Garcia with the acoustic Paula Abdul performance. only one place is left in the top 24 (funny, I count two). Thaddeus overheard Kara say great things about him. Thaddeus didn’t make it, although he didn’t do anything wrong according to Simon. Aaron Kelly forgets the words and makes it, while Thaddeus does nothing wrong and gets cut. What’s wrong with this picture?
Obviously, this means Andrew Garcia is in, though he doesn’t know it yet. as well, I’ve only counted eleven males so far. who else is in the top 24? According to the final scene with Ryan, it’s Chris Golightly, someone else I’d rather see go in favor of Thaddeus. Also, why didn’t we see his induction into the Top 24?
…Wait a minute. According to the stupid dancing montage of the top 24, Tim Urban is the mystery semifinalist. I didn’t know he had Chris Golightly’s stupid haircut for a brief moment then got rid of it. Hmm, I’m guessing something happened between Chris’ audition airing and Hollywood week, because I doubt he’d go unseen being in the top 24 with all of the hype he was given. that would also explain the attention given to Tim during Hollywood week. Mysterious…
My fellow Idol recapper says the story circulating now is that Chris was disqualified just in the past couple of days for not telling the producers about a previous (expired) contract. Its not clear why he would have to tell them about a contract that isn’t in play anymore, but thats the story as it stands now obviously, the details might not be correct. nevertheless, Chris is out, Tim is in.
Will anyone not notice the conspicuously inconspicuous Chris/Tim switch? We’ll see when the voting performances finally begin next Tuesday with Jenn Brasler and the twelve girls. I’ll be back on Wednesday for the guys. see ya then!

Meet Ontario’s newest apple
Posted by: | Comments
“If you have a good product, you want to bring it out and celebrate it,” explains apple grower Irma Botden of Global Fruit about the Red Prince apple.

Ontario farmers have new ammunition in the war against imports: the Red Prince apple.
The apple hit supermarkets last week with a splash, backed by a public relations team and a Twitter account.
“If you have a good product, you want to bring it out and celebrate it,” explains apple grower Irma Botden of Global Fruit. “I think this is an apple that stands out.”
The pure red apple straddles the sweet-tart divide and can be eaten fresh or used in cooking. It doesn’t have the wow factor of a Honeycrisp, but it is tasty, juicy and crisp.
It took nine years to get the Red Prince, a cross between Golden delicious and Jonathan apples, ready for consumers.
First Botden and her husband, Marius, had to select an apple that tastes good, stores well and works with our climate. the Dutch couple had previously grown the Red Prince in Holland, where it was discovered in 1994. they returned to Holland to secure the Canadian rights to breed the apple.
In 2001, they brought root stock from Holland, planted it in their Thornbury-area nursery, grafted branches on to it and made trees. the trees spent two years in the nursery followed by three years in the orchard before bearing fruit. It took until 2009 to grow enough good apples to bring to Longo’s, Sobeys and some Loblaws.
The crop was picked in October, but was too tart and tangy to sell immediately. the apples sat in cold storage until they reached what Botden calls “the perfect blend between sweet and tangy.”
Global Fruit has 6 million Red Prince apples to sell by the summer. they enlisted Martin’s Family Fruit Farm to pack and distribute, and Toronto-based Faye Clack Communications to market them.
Together, they came up with the idea for a “Red Prince Civility Event,” handing out 10,000 free apples on Feb. 5 and creating a 30-day civility challenge. the Red Prince apple tweets a daily task – such as “smile often at others” or “make eye contact with people” – from @RedPrinceApple.
“In all honesty the Red Prince Apple Rocks the apple world,” tweeted Ontario barbecue guru and cookbook author Ted Reader. “Going to grill it up and see how it works.”
Toronto-based trendspotter Dana McCauley joined the tweeting with: “Better than chocolates? Give your lover Red Prince apples for Valentine’s Day. Or not. I really don’t care about VDay.”
Global Fruit is on a bigger crusade to reduce Ontario’s reliance on imported apples while modernizing our apple industry.
Botden says the majority of Ontario’s apple trees are more than 10 years old, and most apples are being turned into juice.
“It’s really, in our opinion, outdated,” she says, “and it’s time to rejuvenate the apple industry.”
Global Fruit uses new technology and management techniques to create high-density orchards to grow high-quality fresh apples such as Honeycrisp, Ambrosia and Red Prince. It has planted more than 1,000 acres of orchard with about 1,175 trees per acre.

V-day APSU Joins Global Effort to Stop Violence Against Women and Girls
Posted by: | Comments
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. At 7 p.m. on March 30 and 31, V-Day APSU will present a two-night only benefit reading of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues,” at Austin Peay State University’s Clement Auditorium.
Last year, more than 4,200 communities hosted V-Day benefits around the world, raising funds and awareness toward ending violence against women. These highly successful events raised more than $4 million through performance of “The Vagina Monologues,” readings from V-Day’s “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer” and “Any one of us: Words From Prison” and screenings of V-Day’s documentary “Until the Violence Stops.” APSU has joined this global movement as part of the V-Day 2010 College Campaign.
This marks the ninth year in a row APSU has presented a benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues.” This benefit production is sponsored by the APSU Women’s Studies Program and Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance.
Bringing this show to APSU this year is an attempt to create a “V-Season,” a series of events between Feb. 1 and April 30 that promote the V-Day movement and the eradication of violence against women. other events during the “V-Season” include a presentation by Dr. Jill Eichhorn on “V-Day: a Season of Courage and Joy” at 2 p.m., March 24 in the Felix G. Woodward Library and a presentation by Dr. Jill Franks on “Finding Their Voice: Twentieth Century Irish Women Writers” at 2 p.m., March 30 in the Woodward Library.
For more information on these events, contact Dr. Jill Eichhorn at 931-221-6314 or eichhornje@apsu.edu.

‘Male Pill’ trials open doors for the legal vultures
TWENTY couples in the Capital are taking part in clinical trial
s of a new “male Pill” being developed by Edinburgh University. with two jags a month, the male volunteers will effectively trick their bodies into stopping producing sperm.
Scientists believe it could prove as effective as the Pill. But legal vultures may be circling, with the suggestion that a woman could sue a partner if he failed to get his jags and she fell pregnant.
Claims on Scotland
IF only Scotland had got the two points from their “extra’ conversion in Cardiff on Saturday an agonising late defeat might have been staved off.
Spotted wearing a kilt was Nigel Brown despite being an Irishman. then again, Nigel’s son, Kelly, was one of the stars of the Scottish side, having been born here in Edinburgh, so “honorary nationality” is easily conferred, surely?
On the subject of tartan, a little bit of the Cardiff pitch was forever Scotland; how could it be otherwise when one of the Millennium Stadium ground-staff sported a kilt as he replaced divots?
Football talk best left to pros
POLITICIANS often like to gain some street cred by talking about football. But Edinburgh Pentlands Tory MSP and genuine Hearts fan David McLetchie must have cringed when his colleagues messed it up during a chat session he was compering at the Tories’ conference in Perth last week.
The last question to be put to the panel was whether they would be supporting England in the World Cup. Annabel Goldie said her only awareness of football was Scotland coach Craig LEVINE and Shadow Scottish Secretary David Mundell referred to England manager Fabio CAPELLA.
It’s a small world
ALISTAIR Darling has to fly to some faraway places on his mission to help tackle the global recession. A couple of weekends ago he was in a remote part of northern Canada for the G7 finance ministers meeting – but he discovered he wasn’t so far from home after all.
“When I stepped off the plane on Baffin Island – between the Hudson Bay and Greenland – the first Canadian official I met at the airport was a man from Prestonpans.”
Make a Profit Out of Blogging
Posted by: | CommentsWhen most people think of what it means to make money blogging, two words seem to come up almost automatically: “instant cash”. And yet blogging for money isn’t your ticket to quick wealth as it’s often made out to be. A majority of today’s most lucrative blogs weren’t managed by people who used quick-fix solutions. Instead, these bloggers relied on long-term solutions that would ensure their blog’s place in the online world.
One of the first things that you have to do as a professional blogger is to get ready for all the work that lies ahead of you. Keep in mind that your blog won’t be the only one of its kind that’s already up and running, which means that competition for reader’s attention is much stiffer now. Like every other business enterprise, blogging won’t give you a lot of revenue at the start! A blog needs to be paid a lot of attention to, especially during its first year or so. If you already spend most of your day in your full-time job, you have to be prepared to devote around 4 more hours of your time just to maintain and update your site.
Despite these challenges, professional blogging can prove to be very fulfilling once your site has gained a foothold in its own niche and readership base. Not only do you get to write about things that you’re passionate about; you also get to earn thousands of dollars each month just for posting your blog entries! Before proceeding, however, don’t overlook these golden rules for starting your own money-making blog. Follow these principles, and you’ll find that blogging for money can be as enjoyable as it is profitable:
1. Decide on a niche to specialize in, and plan out your blog accordingly:
Will you be writing about sports? Or will you be running a steady stream of political commentary on your site? Are you considering putting up restaurant reviews? Whatever it is that you choose to specialize in, make sure that the rest of your blog follows suit. Choose a blog template, for example, that matches your overall theme, and keep your blog posts within the bounds of your chosen niche.
You can afford to create an off-topic blog post every so often, but if you want to gain your readers’ trust and establish yourself as an expert, it’s better to be consistent with your blog entries. For instance, if your blog is about technology, don’t write at length about how you and your girlfriend had a fight the other night, or share your favorite recipe for moussaka.
A cardinal rule concerning this is to pick a topic that you’re really interested in, one that you could write about for a good, long while. In other words, choose a subject that you actually love. It’s hard to fake enthusiasm for a topic that you don’t actually care much about, and it’s a tactic that usually backfires. Don’t start a blog on technology just because it’s a popular subject.
Instead, choose a niche that you feel strongly about, whether it’s food, politics, religion, photography, or even something as esoteric as zoology.
Remember, a good blog is one that’s written with obvious zeal and passion, and dealing with a topic you love ensures that you won’t get sick of writing about it year after year.
2. Update frequently:
Updating your blog regularly can make a big difference in the volume of traffic that your blog receives. Because site traffic usually translates into revenue, you have to ensure that readers are visiting your blog frequently. Encourage them to visit by updating your content as regularly as you can. People don’t want to return to a blog only to find a post that they’d already read before! Make your readers’ visits worth their time by providing them with new content as often as possible.
Frequent updating also ensures that Google and other search engines index your site frequently, making your blog more visible and accessible to others. If you don’t want your blog to fall into obscurity, you have to work at giving your readers a lot of fresh entries.
3. Take advantage of ad networks and affiliate programs:
Once you’ve got your blog up and running, you can look into more direct ways of earning money from your site. A good way to jumpstart this is by signing up for Google Adsense, which rewards you for each click that an advertising link receives from your site.
You can also sign up for an affiliate program such as Amazon.com Associates, Clickbank, or Azoogle. An affiliate program will reward you for every purchase or sign-up that a visitor of your blog makes, as long as he/she clicked through to the product offer from your blog.
Whether or not you like it, blogging for money will always involve some form of advertising in your blog. Remember, however, that the volume of traffic your site receives will affect the number of clicks that your ad links will receive. No matter how great your affiliate program is, it won’t produce a lot of revenue if your blog doesn’t have a lot of visitors.
4. Write quality posts:
No matter how frequently you update your site, and no matter how many ad networks you’re part of, you can’t earn any long-term revenue unless you offer your readers a lot of quality, credible content. Nobody wants to read something that’s poorly or shabbily written, so do your best to write as well and as accurately as you can.
When your readers realize that they can rely on you to give them solid advice and credible information regarding your niche, they’re bound to return to your blog, as well as create backlinks to your site that will boost your search engine ranking. The moment that your readers see that you’re an expert whgo can share valuable knowledge and information, they’re bound to become loyal visitors who can boost your traffic and create revenue for you.
Although there are different ways through which people make money blogging, the best tactic is still to provide quality content to your readers. Remember, people aren’t visiting your site just to ogle at your blog template! Remember, too, that you have to make prudent use of all the elements in your blog, especially when it comes to your affiliate programs and advertising strategies. Once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you’re sure to be blogging your way towards a real and sustainable profit!
